Industrial hemp of Hokkaido -the challenge towards a future-
Conclusion of test farm for 2 years (2014-2015)
The productive capacity of biomass is very high and it is the biomass crop which was most excellent in the crop of Hokkaido.
“Tochigishiro”, from the central region of Japan, can not get a hempseed in Hokkaido. Because, the flowering time is late, there is very little production of seed and multiplication of seed is difficult in Hokkaido.
In order to do aeconomical cultivation in Hokkaido, a stable supply of seeds is indispensable, so need to consider importing the seed from overseas.
In the processing test, it was confirmed by the trial run of fireworks that it is the almost same quality as traditional hemp charcoal from the stalk.
After this, it is necessary to take processing tests, such as an introduction of an overseas variety, establishment of the mechanization growing system, and production of thermal insulation.
Test farm
We started the test farm in May 2014.These Photos are from seeding to harvest.
Dry matter production of hemp in 2014
The largest dry matter weight(,stem + leaves+flower) of the density plot
sampled on September 24 was 26.3 tons per ha.
This is about half of the record of the DATA obtained at Kitami Agricultural
Experiment Station in 2007.However, it is still superior to dent corn and
sugar beet.So it was confirmed that hemp is very promising as a biomass
crop.

Finally, I would like to show you the Experiment of possessing the stems
and fire works using hemp stalk charcoal made in Hokkaido. In Japan, hemp
stalk charcoal have been used for traditional fireworks as an ingredient
of gun powder. Currently, about 150 fireworks companies in Japan use 50
tons of hemp stalk charcoal made in China. If you want to produce 50tons
of domestic hemp charcoal , you need to grow 50ha of hemp in Japan. But
now we have only 5ha Japan.
